President’s message on the launch of Bolder Together, McMaster’s Strategic Plan 2026-2031

At this pivotal moment in McMaster University’s history, I am proud to introduce Bolder Together, our new five-year strategic plan.

We are developing innovators. McMaster invented problem-based learning and evidence-based medicine, two models that disrupted how medicine is taught and practiced at universities around the world. We will build on that legacy with a learner-first approach that prepares McMaster graduates to think critically, adapt quickly and lead in a rapidly changing world.

And it starts with place.

McMaster was founded in Toronto in 1887, and a permanent home was established in Hamilton in 1930. In 2030, we will mark 100 years in the Ambitious City, a launchpad for our global impact.

From our classrooms and labs, McMaster’s reach extends far beyond our campus. Our scholars, researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, staff and students collaborate with partners around the world, and our alumni community spans the globe.

I have never felt more confident in the future of McMaster than I do today, and that is because of the strong foundation we have built together. We are united by our commitment to inclusive excellence, shared purpose, sound financial practices and a common resolve to serve our communities and society.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Strategic Planning Team and Advisors, the Strategic Oversight Committee, Institutional Research and Analysis, Communications and Marketing, as well as the thousands of individuals who brought diverse perspectives and took the time to contribute with care and candour.

The process to develop this plan was ambitious and it reflects the voices of our diverse communities. While Indigenous viewpoints also informed this work, continuing dialogue and collaboration with the Office of the Vice-Provost Indigenous and the Indigenous Education Council will guide the strategic priorities presented here as they evolve over the next five years alongside the forthcoming Indigenous Strategic Plan.

As we work to renew and expand the promise of McMaster, my hope is that this plan empowers us to act boldly, care deeply, and lead with purpose as we move forward Bolder Together.

Kind regards,

Susan Tighe Signature
