I am pleased to share the Accelerating Commercialization and Entrepreneurial Activities (ACE): Future Directions for McMaster University Summary Report.

Over the past several months, Dr. Bruce Archibald, President of Archibald Innovations Inc. and Strategic Advisor to the President, engaged extensively with leaders across McMaster, partners throughout our regional innovation ecosystem, and experts from across Canada. Those findings have helped shape a clear picture of our current strengths, our emerging opportunities, and the steps required to enhance our impact. They also confirm the depth of talent and the innovative spirit that define McMaster.

ACE Summary Report: Key Findings and Strategic Recommendations

Executive Summary:

This report represents the first step in accelerating commercialization and entrepreneurial (ACE) activities at McMaster University and its affiliated hospitals. Over the course of seven months, the author engaged with more than 50 experts at McMaster and across Canada to gather insights, examine best practices, and conduct a comprehensive inventory of McMaster’s innovation assets. These consultations informed the analysis and recommendations presented here.

Universities worldwide are expanding their focus to include research commercialization, often through intellectual property licensing and spin-off creation. Successful commercialization requires a long-term perspective—building awareness, skills, infrastructure, venture capital, and partnerships.

Building on McMaster’s recent successes and long-term commitment to innovation, this review was initiated following the appointment of President Susan Tighe, who has made advancing commercialization and entrepreneurial activities a key institutional priority. The overarching goal is to position McMaster as a national leader in innovation by strengthening its ecosystem, clarifying governance, and accelerating impact.

At a time when innovation is critical to national competitiveness and prosperity, these steps will position McMaster as a leader in shaping Canada’s future.

  • Train Entrepreneurs: Educate a new generation of innovators to benefit the region and country.
  • Enhance Global Reputation: Attract talent and increase investment.

McMaster’s Entrepreneurial Engine: The Current Ecosystem

McMaster operates a broad, decentralized innovation ecosystem that has grown significantly over the past five years. While the Office of the Vice-President, Research (OVPR) serves as the central coordinator, several key contributors drive commercialization and entrepreneurial activity:

  • McMaster Industry Liaison Office (MILO): Supports contract research, intellectual property (IP) management (reviewing 100-130 disclosures and filing 40–50 patents annually), licensing and research-based startups.
  • McMaster Innovation Park (MIP): A premier location for McMaster startups and industry partners, including anchor tenants such as Fusion Pharmaceuticals (now part of AstraZeneca) and the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC).
  • The Forge: Since 2015, this incubator has provided mentorship and seed funding to support student-led ventures.
  • The Clinic: Launched in 2022 through the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation & Entrepreneurship, this hub mentors next-generation entrepreneurs by bridging clinical problems and commercial solutions.
  • Faculty Leadership: Faculty-driven commercialization & entrepreneurship woven into strategic plans and faculty-based activities.
  • Hospital Partners: Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton actively support commercialization of clinical research.

Critical Observations:

Despite strong momentum and enthusiasm, the review identified major structural challenges:

  • Lack of Overarching Strategy: Interviewees repeatedly cited the absence of a clear, well-articulated and coordinated strategy for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship C&E activities, resulting in efforts driven more by opportunity than alignment.
  • Funding Instability: Approximately 50% of current C&E programming lacks ongoing funding commitments beyond the 2025/26 fiscal year, relying heavily on short-term discretionary funds.
  • Governance and Accountability: A more defined governance model is needed to improve accountability, visibility, and communication across the ecosystem.

National Context: Comparative Analysis & Emerging Models

Most Canadian research-intensive universities have governance structures like McMaster, with the OVPR overseeing innovation and commercialization activities—such as technology transfer, training programs, incubators, and research parks.

Some institutions are adopting new models to accelerate commercialization and entrepreneurship (ACE) that reflect aggressive, aspirational strategies to build innovation culture and assert leadership nationally and globally.

McMaster has seen rapid growth in commercialization and entrepreneurial programming over the past five years, but its governance structure remains largely unchanged. This has created some internal and external uncertainty about who is driving the agenda. There is an opportunity to clarify leadership and consider structural adjustments to accelerate McMaster’s innovation ecosystem and strengthen its global position.

The ACE Roadmap: Future Directions and Recommendations:

The objective is to guide McMaster University to become a recognized national leader in building an entrepreneurial culture and advancing the commercialization of technologies. All recommendations are intended to be inventor-friendly and adhere to the underlying principles of focus, simplicity, and accountability.

Key Structural and Policy Recommendations:

The recommendations, which are currently being considered for implementation, are structured across three horizons—immediate actions, short-term priorities, and longer-term initiatives to ensure early wins, sustained momentum, and lasting impact.

  • Vision and Governance:

The report recommends strategies designed to signal the importance of commercialization within the University’s senior leadership team.

  • Develop a clear ACE Vision Statement (“North Star”) to guide priorities.
  • Expand the Vice-President, Research role and title to Vice-President. Research and Commercialization (VPRC).
  • Establish a management structure under the VPRC to strengthen collaboration across campus.
  • Review the alignment of University resources to support ACE strategies and activities across campus and affiliated hospitals.
  • Create an internal ACE Coordination Committee to provide strategic oversight.
  • Policy and Priorities:

To support a culture of entrepreneurship, McMaster must align its internal incentives and policies.

  • VPRC to define priority areas for accelerating C&E activity (e.g., nuclear and biomedical discoveries).
  • Review and update Intellectual Property (IP) policy to ensure it promotes commercialization while remaining fair to partners, including affiliated hospitals.
  • Space:

Access to laboratory and office space is critical for startup success.

  • Develop a campus-wide inventory of laboratory space (including MIP) to support startups, with allocation and rental rates aligned to ACE priorities.
  • Programs and Funding:

Program efficiencies and sustainable funding models are required as half of McMaster’s C&E programming relies on funding that expires by 2025/26.

  • Consolidate entrepreneurial training, with The Clinic as the primary vehicle for university-wide programming.
  • Review the structure, funding, and programming of MILO and The Forge to maximize their impact on researchers and entrepreneurs.
  • Explore the creation of a Joint Contract Research Organization (CRO) in partnership with the Faculty of Health Sciences and affiliated hospitals.
  • Develop a 5-year financial plan: funded by the University, philanthropy and external sources.
  • Streamline the processes around contract, licensing, and partnership agreements to reduce barriers for our researchers and private-sector partners.
  • Engagement & Reputation:

 McMaster must aggressively tell its story to attract partners and influence policy.

  • Develop an engagement strategy with senior federal and provincial officials to build awareness and support for McMaster’s ACE ecosystem.
  • implement a five-year communications strategy to elevate McMaster’s profile as a national leader in ACE activities for internal and external audiences.

Conclusion: Driving Economic Prosperity through Innovation

McMaster University is at a pivotal moment, building on its strong foundation in commercialization and a recent surge in entrepreneurial programming and awareness. There is clear momentum and a mandate from President Susan Tighe to significantly elevate McMaster’s reputation and success in the commercialization and entrepreneurship space.

Sustaining this momentum requires addressing core structural challenges: the absence of a guiding strategy, unclear governance and accountability, and the instability of short-term funding.

By implementing the Accelerated Commercialization and Entrepreneurial (ACE) roadmap, McMaster will strengthen its entrepreneurial culture and deliver tangible economic benefits to the broader community. The University is well positioned to drive commercialization that creates jobs, attracts investment, and increases economic activity for the province and the country, while generating greater short-term returns on research through more Canadian products and companies.

This initiative will also support the Greater Hamilton region by advancing the life sciences cluster and accelerating efforts to attract companies and investment.

Strategic coordination, sustainable funding, and the elevation of McMaster’s existing strengths will maximize commercial potential, ensuring that the University’s innovations translate into economic vitality for the region, the province, and Canada. If McMaster acts boldly now, it will not only lead in research but also shape Canada’s innovation economy—driving social and economic impact, attracting top-tier talent, and developing the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs at a time when this leadership is urgently needed.
